You are never too old to learn

“Anyone who stops learning is old, whether at twenty or eighty. Anyone who keeps learning stays young. The greatest thing in life is to keep your mind young.”

Henry Ford

I want to share with you another of my Feldenkrais success stories.

When lockdown hit in March I stopped all my tango classes and moved my Feldenkrais class online. Why hadn’t I thought of it before? Suddenly I was able to bring my Feldenkrais teaching to people all over the country. We are talking UK here and of course friends and family from abroad could join too. Hooray!

My partner Paul’s father had mentioned some physical distress and we tried to invite him to join my online Feldenkrais group classes as well. With the best intention of course. He had heard me talking about my work already once or twice before (I am getting better at the English understatement) and he gave in.

These are his experiences he allowed me to share with you all.

Leslie’s Feldenkrais Journey

” In March 2020 I joined a Zoom online group for Feldenkrais lessons, presented by Bärbel, with the aim of of improving my general wellbeing. As an octogenarian, my muscular strength had been declining, as was my general stamina.

I found it difficult to settle down to the lessons, used as I have been to working out with weights & machines, where the emphasis is upon operating the the maximum of one’s ability. In short, I initially failed to grasp the importance of such small movements in gaining a better understanding & control of one’s body. I must emphasise that this was in no way a failure on Bärbel’s part. She is an excellent teacher, precise & authoritative & It was obvious that other group members were gaining tremendous benefit from their participation..

I had also had a problem with my left hip for some time, experiencing pain, which at times made me limp & curtailed my activities. Once Bärbel knew of this, she suggested that I would benefit from a series of one to one Zoom sessions, tailored especially for me.  I accepted her kind offer we commenced working together in June for a series of 12 lessons.

I found that this approach, which enabled me to have private discussions with Bärbel as to my progress & understanding, was much more positive in my case & I began to feel the benefit of her guidance to such an extent that my hip problem has been resolved.  I now intend to continue with the next tranche of lessons, as my understanding of Feldenkrais deepens, as does the benefit I gain from it. “

Pretty amazing, isn’t it?

We are successfully continuing our work together and normally we are meeting three times a week to work on his movability.

Bärbel Rücker, UK guild certified Feldenkrais practitioner

After 4 years of Feldenkrais Practitioner Training in Switzerland I am a certified Feldenkrais Practitioner since 2017. Since then I am sharing my knowledge about this amazing method in private classes, group settings and online.

To keep myself up to date, I regularly participate in advanced Feldenkrais Trainings in Europe. As much as possible I am joining the daily Feldenkrais practitioner study-group “An AY a Day” for my own development. Being a student myself helps me to relate better to my students and keeps me grounded.
