Since 2020 taking online Awareness Through Movement (ATM) Feldenkrais classes has become a real alternative to in person classes. Especially when getting to your nearest Feldenkrais practitioner would take longer than the class itself.
But what happens in an online ATM class?
In fact an online Feldenkrais class isn’t much different than an in person class. As long as you have a stable internet connection, a device (computer, laptop, tablet or mobile) plus a webcam (often already part of your device) you’re in business.
I am using Zoom, a video conferencing platform for my online group and private classes. You can download the Zoom application for free but you do not need to to join a meeting. You can join directly through a web browser (like Chrome, Safari, or Edge) on your desktop or mobile device. When prompted to open or download the app, simply cancel the prompt and select the “Join from your Browser” link.
That’s nearly all the technical stuff you need to do.
Before you join the Zoom meeting = my online Feldenkrais class you prepare your “workspace”: In most classes that’ll mean you’ll need a space on the floor with a blanket or yoga mat plus 1-2 towels for support. Your camera points at this space so I can guide you safely through the lesson.
That’s all.
This is what happens when joining an online Feldenkrais class:
- I’ll ask you a lot of questions (I really mean a lot). You’ll listen and answer them for yourself.
- Each Feldenkrais class consists of several chapters separated by short rests.
- During a chapter I’ll ask you to move one, two or more body parts and to vary the way you do it. The complexity of the movements will increase chapter by chapter.
- Your main focus is to look for comfort and ease.
- By the end of the class you will revisit one or two movements from the first chapters. Often you are able to distinguish a significant change in the quality and ease.
- Each class ends by coming up onto your feet observing the differences in standing and walking from before the class.
- Once you have time to process the mics can be opened. I encourage you to share your experiences and to ask questions.
Sounds intriguing?
It is indeed.
Even better is to experience it yourself.
Be willing to take the first step, no matter how small it is. Concentrate on the fact that you are willing to learn. Absolute miracles will happen.
