How easily can you look over your shoulder?

To be able to function well in our world we are dependent on a free head movement. Our head is carrying our tele receptors (e.g. eyes, ears, nose) which we use to navigate through space and to locate danger.

Unfortunately we are accumulating a lot of tension in the area around the shoulders and neck.

Of course you can help yourself with technology and invest in gadgets. For example modern cars come with parking sensors and cameras. They are useful until they are switched off or even malfunctioning. Neither will they help you getting into the car nor out of it.

But why not invest in your own mobility and flexibility. One hour a week might do wonders and your parking becomes an easier task.

Are you ready to test your range of movement?

A little Feldenkrais test move #2

Take this little test (at your own risk) and see if you could benefit from working on the freedom of your head movement the Feldenkrais way.

  • Sit on a firm chair or stool and place your feet firmly under your knees.
  • Turn your head and shoulders slowly to the right and come back again. Repeat it once or twice.
  • Now turn your head and shoulders to the left and come back to the middle again. Repeat it once or twice.

Reflect on how easy (or not) this simple movement felt.

  • How far could you see?
  • Was one side easier than the other?
  • Could you hear some noises?

The result might be surprising or even unsettling for you. But it does not need to define you.

“(..) You will see that five movements turn the body toward the back more than if you took a crowbar and turned it. (..)”

Moshé Feldenkrais, AY #54

By bringing attention to the way you move you can counteract the stiffness in your body.

Imagine how nice it would be to:

  • widen your range of head movement.
  • turn smoothly in the car when parking.
  • check effortlessly if the road is clear to cross.
  • improve your dance technique (e.g. ochos, giros, boleos).
  • easily locate the person behind you who is calling for your attention.

Just one Feldenkrais Awareness Through Movement online class can make a difference. Most likely you’ll end up more relaxed.

But be aware that you might want to “move with ease” again and again!

As usual curiosity is crucial when joining my online Feldenkrais classes.

Thanks to the internet you can benefit from my Feldenkrais classes from wherever you are in Europe via Zoom. That will even save you time and money as you skip your commute to the in person classes.

If you feel curious about it and you could do with a wider range of head movement and comfort in your body please get in touch.
